THE name of Dons rugby legend Kevin Parkhouse will live on – in the shape of a novice guide dog.
The Parkhouse family of Askern were in for a treat when they got to meet their choice, Parky, after they won a Lakeside Village shopping centre competition to name a guide dog puppy.
John Parkhouse chose the name Parky in memory of his father-in-law Kevin – nicknamed Parky – who was tragically killed in a road accident five years ago when a lorry hit his car on the M180 in Humberside, leaving behind not only his devastated family, but a shattered community.
Almost as well known for his commitment to charity work as his rugby, Parky was a kind and selfless man, who dedicated much of his time to helping others and the local community in Doncaster, making Parky the guide dog a perfect pup to ensure his goodwill lives on.
John said: “Thank you to everyone for the opportunity to meet Parky. It was fantastic to meet him and very strange and emotional hearing people shouting Parky’s name again.
“But it’s very comforting to know that his name is associated with something so worthwhile, and the puppy certainly lives up to his namesake – he’s a big fella with a lot of love to give.
“On behalf of the Parkhouse family I’d like to wish Parky the best of luck during his training and to the person who he ends up helping. You’ll always feel safe when Parky is around you, we certainly did.”
