Events continue despite cash cut

FUNDING for major events in Sheffield is being cut - but none are set to fold.

Cash currently helps cover the cost of events ranging from Fright Night and the Tramlines music festival to sporting contests such as World Snooker.

Some funding is also given to the nationally-renowned DocFest documentary-making festival, also held annually.

Savings include shedding two managers and providing smaller grants for event running costs.

Scott Barton, chief executive of Yellow Bus events, which organises the Fright Night Halloween Festival, said: “Last year we had around £25,000 from the council but this year we will receive £20,000. We understand they have a significant challenge but they are still providing significant support and the show will go on.

“Over the last few years we have achieved sponsorship and support from a range of bodies, which has helped us cover costs.

“The event costs £70,000 to £80,000 to stage but we want to keep it free. We will be seeking further sponsorship and commercial income to make up for the council cut.”

Tramlines, which last year attracted 175,000 visitors over the weekend the music festival was held, earning it the nickname ‘Urban Glastonbury’, will also continue this year, organisers have promised.

Sarah Nulty, festival director, said: “We have always said we want to rely on the council less and less as the festival grows. That being said, the funding we receive, together with sponsorship and revenue, is key to the festival’s success.

“We just need to make this money work harder and look at other ways of generating cash.

“We are grateful for the continued support we get from the council and are committed to doing everything we can to keep Tramlines both independent and free for all.”

Sheffield Fayre, the annual two-day event held in Norfolk Heritage Park in August each year, is losing £21,000 from its budget - but Sheffield Council said it would work with community groups which organise the festival to look at ‘new ways’ of putting on the host of displays and activities for a lower price.
