Sheffield United have bagged Danny Wilson as their new boss, but as a former Wednesday manager this could well end in tears and he is going to have to hit the ground running because if he doesn’t the heat will be on.
However, I thought I’d digress a bit this week from football and highlight some other local opportunities. The Twenty/20 cricket season starts this week and Yorkshire are 16/1 to win it and 11/2 with us to win the North Group. This northern group looks wide open, and Yorkshire have as good a chance as anyone.
One Sheffield lady who has been all the rage this week is Jessica Ennis. She has been heavily backed to pick up the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award and we have had to cut her price from 6/1 to 3/1 after some lumpy bets.
It seems a few good judges feel she is going to be the Heptathlon Queen this summer.
She needs to avoid injury though, but if she does they could be on to something. She will probably break Denise Lewis’s 11 year record soon. And don’t forget she came third in last years Sports Personality Award, so she does tick a lot of boxes.
Sheffield boxer Ryan Rhodes is facing a huge fight on the 19th of June, as he takes on the Mexican Saul Alvarez and local fight fans will be under no illusions as to how tough this will be.
Alvarez is a potential star in the making and Rhodes will need all his experience and guile to get a result in America. We are 1/7 about Alvarez and 4/1 on Rhodes so the odds suggest this will be a walk in the park for the Mexican. I’m not so sure. He’s good this kid, but he still has a lot to prove and you right the veteran Rhodes off at your peril.
We’ll have more on this nearer the time of the fight. Bet of the week is England 2-0 against Switzerland.
The Swiss are dire and cannot score. Get on!
