Enjoy an arty treat with your cup of tea
TEA'S up – and how about a nice painting too?
Art is on the menu at a caf at the University of Sheffield.
Three local artists are displaying their work on the walls of The Edge Caf in the Endcliffe Village at the University of Sheffield.
Matt Wood, a former student at the University and ex-resident at Sorby Hall of Residence which was demolished in 2006 to make way for the Endcliffe Village, is displaying his paintings of famous figures.
Matt has never formally studied art and only began painting when he wanted to decorate his first year bedroom in Sorby.
Using Dulux paint and some materials from his father who works in the sign industry, Matt uses his fingers and thumbs to create 'photo-realistic' portraits.
The university is working with Smart Art Galleries, who look after six local Sheffield artists, getting their work displayed around Sheffield.
Jasper Prachek, a photographer who took pictures of punk bands, and Kate Jackson, former lead vocalist with the Long Blondes who created the band's artwork during their six year career, are also displaying their work. All the art is for sale.
Matt said: "Although Sorby is no longer standing, I think it's great my art is being displayed near where I first began painting. I hope students visiting the caf will enjoy the art and maybe decide to decorate their rooms with it, like I did."
n Meanwhile, experts in embroidery gathered in Sheffield for a three-day conference at Hallam University titled Melody of Stitch. The event organised by the Embroiderers' Guild brought in 71,000 to the city and featured talks, demonstrations and workshops. Guests had the opportunity to meet textile artists and specialist traders as well as pick up some new skills and tips.
Delegates attending the conference also had the opportunity to experience the Treasures of the V&A exhibition at the Millennium Galleries, an exclusive exhibition of ecclesiastical embroidery at Sheffield Cathedral and a civic reception at the Town Hall.
