Electoral system

Have your say

Unfortunately the Electoral Commission does not decide how we elect our governments (J Oxby, Letters, June 17). The party in power is in control as Parliament has to vote through any changes. ‘First past the post’ won the Tories the last election with only 37 per cent of the vote so they have no reason to change the system.

The Electoral Reform Society and Unlock Democracy are leading the fight for a fairer and more representative voting system. By any measure it is plainly undemocratic.

It would help if Labour supported change instead of clinging to hopes of getting an overall majority in 2020. A Green motion on June 3 sought council support for the ‘Make Seats Match Votes’ campaign for proportional representation elections. Labour councillors block voted against and the motion failed.
