A COUNCIL has been criticised for spending £55,000 on new windows at a secondary school which is due to be closed and demolished.

The investment was made at Willowgarth High School, Grimethorpe, by Barnsley Council - although the school is due to shut in five months.

It is being merged with neighbouring Priory School, at Lundwood.

One member of staff at Willowgarth, who did not wish to be named, said: “The school will be demolished within a year and the windows would have lasted a few more years.

“It’s absolutely stupid.”

But Barnsley Council defended the decision, saying it was necessary for ‘health and safety reasons.
