The University of Sheffield has revealed plans to install six new CCTV cameras to combat an increase in crime and anti-social behaviour.

Four cameras could be put on the outside of the Arts Tower, while two could go on the drama studio in Shearwood Road.

According to the plans, the need for the extra security is ‘imminent’ following a ‘spate of increased incidents of crime, theft, anti-social behaviour and homeless people sleeping around the base of the Arts Tower and within the concourse hard standing area’.

The Arts Tower is open to students and staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but the security desk is not manned the whole time.

The university says the security of the thoroughfare needs to be improved to ‘protect the students, staff and environment’.
