A Sheffield University academic who is one of the country’s leading experts on ageing has been awarded the CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
Professor Alan Walker was honoured for his services to social science over a career in the city which stretches back almost 40 years.
He said: “I am absolutely delighted by this honour. It recognises a long and sustained contribution to social research in several fields including ageing.
“I am really pleased too that it acknowledges the leading position of the university’s Department of Sociological Studies in social science research.
“I am also very grateful for the continuing support of departmental and faculty colleagues and would be glad if they regarded it as a collective honour.”
Professor Walker has an exemplary career-long record in championing research into the processes of ageing and has been leading a top £22 million programme in the field.
He is also leading a project which will provide research guiidelines across 14 European countries over the next decade, bringing together 24 partners and over 700 contributor and organisations.
