A SHEFFIELD Hallam University scientist has won a prestigious award and medal for his research into how the crucial components of LCD flat screen TVs and iPhones work.
Professor Doug Cleaver, from the university’s Materials and Engineering Research Institute, is a specialist in the field and has been awarded the Cyril Hilsum Medal by the British Liquid Crystal Society.
He is the seventh recipient of the medal, normally awarded to scientists for notable contributions to liquid crystal science and technology in the 10 years preceding their nomination.
Professor Cleaver said the award cemented Sheffield Hallam’s reputation as one of the leading centres for liquid crystal research in the UK.
He said: “This award recognises my long-standing commitment to research in this area and is an excellent achievement for myself personally, for my co-workers and for the university.”
Liquid crystal films are just one 20th of the thickness of a human hair but are the crucial components of flat screen TVs, iPhones and games consoles.
