Third one-day strike planned by university lecturers

Lecturers and support staff at Sheffield’s universities are to stage a one-day strike next Thursday – their third national walk-out in three months.

Academics’ union UCU is again joining forces with Unison and Unite in pursuit of a better pay claim, after employers offered them a one per cent rise.

Lecturers argue they have taken a 13 per cent pay cut in real terms since 2008.

Sheffield has become a focus for anger among academics across the country after it emerged Sheffield University vice-chancellor Professor Sir Keith Burnett received a £105,000 pay rise last year, believed to be the largest in the country.

The university says it moved to secure the services of one of the most able administrators in the country.
