Thousands of Sheffield pupils will stay at home tomorrow due to one day strike action by the city’s two biggest teaching unions - with at least 46 schools to be closed altogether.
Only between 20 and 30 schools will be open as usual with the vast majority telling classes and whole year groups to stay at home.
Action is being taken by the NASUWT and the NUT over Government plans to change teachers’ pension schemes, put back retirement ages and abolish national pay bargaining deals.
It is the second one day stoppage in five months and is part of a rolling national programme of industrial action, this one affecting Yorkshire and the Midlands.
All the city’s secondaries will be affected, with schools closed including King Edward VII, Fir Vale, Westfield and Silverdale.
Most of the others are open only to older year groups, with schools including Firth Park, Hinde House and Yewlands asking only 15 and 16-year-olds to come in as normal.
Primary and special schools are most likely to be closed completely – the list includes Lydgate Juniors, Lydgate Infants, Gleadless Primary and Nook Lane.
Most schools cannot be sure how many staff will be coming in as teachers are not obliged to make their intentions known in advance.
As a result many headteachers have taken an advance decision based on a worst case scenario guided by health and safety issues.
One secondary head said: “Some union members may in the end come into work as usual but we cannot rely on that – we can’t risk having a situation where we have large numbers of students who are not being properly supervised.
“It is always a difficult decision to tell complete year groups to stay at home but at the same time we know parents want to know where they stand well in advance.”
Parents should have received letters from their schools with advice also going up on school websites.
The city council has also been seeking to collect as much advance information as possible on the situation city-wide.
A Sheffield Council spokeswoman said: “It is important parents and carers are aware of how this industrial action might affect the schools their children attend.
“Schools have committed to notifying parents and carers in writing if they are closing, or partially closing. If parents or carers are unsure of any information they should seek clarification from the schools their children attend.”
Sheffield is to be the venue for a major regional demonstration by teachers, with a rally being held in Barker’s Pool at 10am.
Teachers will march to Ponds Forge by 11am where union officers, parents and governors are all expected to speak.
