STUDENTS in Sheffield have donated more than £20,000 to charities for homeless people.

Give As You Rent offers University of Sheffield pupils in student accommodation the chance to pay £6 as part of their rental fees during the academic year.

The funds are then distributed among chosen charities approved by the scheme.

The organisation has been running since 1991 and has managed to secure donations totalling more than £300,000.

This year Give As You Rent raised £23,800, which will be shared among 13 charities.

Pat McGrath, of the university, said: “It’s fantastic to support so many charities.”
