Students learned about mouth cancer during an awareness week organised by trainee dentists at Sheffield University.
Dental students manned stalls every day in The Hub, inside the revamped Students’ Union building.
There was also a stall set up in Sheaf Square in the city centre for a day, aimed at the public.
Other charity events organised during the week included a family bake off, a staff-versus-students football match and a pyjama day.
All proceeds from the week were donated to the Ben Walton Trust, set up in memory of Ben, who died from mouth cancer aged 22.
Ben’s dad Mike visited the union to give a talk about the trust and the work that it does.
Kieran Bhakta, Dental Students’ Society president, said the cancer was becoming more common among young people and the two main risk factors were smoking and excessive alcohol use.
He said: “It was a fantastic week and we are confident we increased the awareness of oral cancer.”
