SHEFFIELD University has been granted planning permission to knock down the Edwardian Wing of the old Jessop Hospital and build an £80 million engineering block - despite a huge campaign to save the Grade II listed building.

The decision was made because members of Sheffield Council’s city centre, south and east planning board felt the benefits to the city of the university’s project outweighed the harm of losing a historic building.

But a final decision on whether to approve the demolition still has to be made by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and campaigners plan to make representations to halt the bulldozers.
