Plans for a second University Technical College for Sheffield are moving forward - with a sponsor confirmed for the project.

Sheffield College is backing the bid, which must be submitted to the Government in time for an October deadline.

The college is already sponsoring the first UTC, set to open at premises in Shoreham Street in September, concentrating on engineering and creative digital media.

A second UTC for 14 to 19-year-olds would specialise in sports and life sciences, and could be part of the Olympic legacy plans being considered for the Don Valley.

College chief executive Heather MacDonald said: “We are delighted to have been selected as the lead sponsor of a second UTC and want to work with other bodies including universities, colleges and schools.

The college will now submit a bid as part of a national competitive process for UTC applications.
