Beating the bullies was the theme of a day-long conference held by pupils and staff at a Sheffield secondary school.
Special guest at the event at Chaucer School in Parson Cross was 21-year-old Samantha Cave, a former Birley Community College pupil who told of her own experiences of bullying in a TV documentary earlier this year.
The school has been working on the issue for the whole academic year, with initiatives so far including an anti-bullying helpline and boxes in reception where concerns can be confidentally placed.
Artist Johnny White has been commissioned to create a large pledge tree which will be a visual reminder of the school’s zero tolerance message.
Assistant head Naomi Evans-Mudie said: “Bullying occurs in all schools at some time. The key is to tackle it directly and make sure the whole school takes responsibility to stop it.”
Samantha told the youngsters: “I want everyone to realise you can get help, you just have to fight.”
The school also welcomed anti-bullying ambassadors from Barnsley’s Springwell Community College.
