A petition has been launched to try and save Rudston School in Rotherham, which is under threat of closure.

The school on Broom Road announced recently that lower pupil numbers than in previous years may mean the possible closure of the site at the end of the summer term on July 9.

But now a petition is quickly gathering support after being launched on Wednesday (March 25).

It says: “We need your help to SAVE RUDSTON SCHOOL!

“The possible closure of Rudston Preparatory School was announced recently in response to falling pupil numbers.

“The school has been a part of the local community for over 60 years and currently employs almost 40 staff. The school has not only been a provider of outstanding education over the years, but through its charitable aims and objectives, it is a supporter of the wider local community. Rudston is so much more than a school; it is a close-knit family who are in need of your support.

“We hope to use this petition to bring our current situation to the attention of as many people as possible and to help secure Rudston Preparatory School for future generations. We would encourage you to share this link with as many of your family, friends and colleagues as you can.

“Please remember to sign your name and SAVE RUDSTON SCHOOL!”

School trustees are also working with a parent group to generate ideas to encourage new pupils.

A spokesman said: “As a parent body we want to do everything we can to ensure the school remains open after this academic year finishes and secure its future for the long-term.

“The meetings we have had show how much the school means to the parents, staff and trustees and re-emphasised what a loss it would be if the doors were closed for good.

“Our children love attending Rudston School and we hope to share that message with the people of Rotherham over the coming weeks.

“Since the news was announced parents have been constantly in touch with the school to support staff and also to provide ideas for what the next step might be.

“Rudston is the only independent school in Rotherham and we think it provides a superb alternative for parents who wish to educate their children via this route.

“We would urge other parents to visit the school to see for themselves why we’re so passionate about keeping it open for the children of Rotherham now and in years to come.”

Rudston operates both a nursery and primary school educating children from the ages of 3 -11 at its Broom Road site. It has occupied the former residential buildings since 1948.

In its most recent inspection (October 2013) it was given a glowing report achieving an excellent score in six out of eight categories, the other two categories being assessed as good.
