World Cup referee Howard Webb took time off the pitch to present certificates to children who took part in football coaching sessions.

Rotherham ref Howard visited Dearne Advanced Learning Centre in Goldthorpe to give a talk on sportsmanship before handing out awards to students who took part in the coaching sessions over the summer school break.

The SportFX sessions, for pupils aged nine to 19, are run with South Yorkshire Police, Barnsley FC, Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright.

Howard said: “The kids were really great today, asking me lots of questions.

“It is good for me to give something back to them and by handing out the certificates in assembly, I had a chance to engage with them on the importance of working hard to succeed, but also to promote a very worthy project that encourages kids to engage in sports and work as a team.

“The project had been running for a couple of years before I became involved but it is great to hear of the numbers of boys and girls that attend both schools on the nights.

“These are kids that otherwise could be hanging around, getting bored but instead are channelling their energy into football, for the better of their communities.”
