THRIFTY parents in South Yorkshire spend the least on kitting children out for their return to school, according to a survey.
Figures collated by Meadowhall Shopping Centre show that mums and dads in the region spend an average of £121 per child on back to school items, ranging from uniforms, to gadgets and stationary. The sum places it at the bottom of the big spending table in the UK, with the average cost standing at £169.
The survey of 2,000 parents show the cost to mums and dads has risen by around 50 per cent in the past 10 years.
Richard Pinfold, marketing director at Meadowhall, said: “The impact of technology in the classroom has had a profound effect on the cost of the average schoolbag, with more and more parents now investing in tablets and E-Readers to give their children a head start in the classroom.”
