A SURPRISE was in store when old folk were invited to pay a visit to a nearby school, to find the pupils had been secretly fundraising to help them buy new outdoor furniture.

At the end of the trip around recently rebuilt Kirk Balk School at Hoyland, Barnsley, residents from nearby Saville Court sheltered housing scheme were presented with a cheque for £103 raised by the youngsters.

A spokeswoman for Berneslai Homes, which manages the housing complex, said: “A group of Year 9 students organised a tour of the new Kirk Balk School for residents of Berneslai Homes Saville Court Sheltered Scheme.

“The residents were overwhelmed at the end of the tour, as the students, who had been secretly fundraising, handed over the cheque, to enable the residents to purchase some much needed outdoor furniture.”
