A PSYCHIATRIC unit is to be built on the site of a Sheffield special school, whose pupils are to move this summer to a new location.
East Hill Primary on East Bank Road is due to shut at the end of the current term, with the children moving to a new school in Norfolk Park Road.
The site is to be leased to Alpha Hospitals, a group which provides specialist psychiatric care to the NHS and which has a unit to the south of the East Hill site.
It is to buy a long-term 300 year lease on the 8.7 acre site where a 46-bed low to medium secure unit will be built in the near future.
In the longer term Alpha has plans for two further 24 bed units and separate rehabilitation flats.
Funding from the deal will help the Sheffield Council continue its strategy of reorganising special school provision throughout the city.
The council is also keen to move out of the site as soon as possible after the closure to avoid costs from keeping it secure.
