A bumper balloon launch helped bring in a new era for a Rotherham school which has joined an academy trust.

Monkhill School at Rawmarsh, which has more than 400 pupils, has teamed up with two other primaries, forming the Sandhill
Multi Academy Trust.

Pupils wore their new uniforms for the big day, which also featured a coffee morning for parents and a debut performance by the school’s new choir.

They performed Happy, Let It Go and Hall of Fame for parents who attended the event.

And pupils in the school gardening club also played their part by putting in plants which will spell out the initials MPA – Monkwood Primary Academy.

Claire Machon, academy office manager, said: “The three schools will be working together to improve standards and we now have a new head of school, Kay Sherburn, and several new staff members.

“We have lots of new things being put in place and we will be doing everything we can to improve standards.”

Moves to convert Monkwood into an academy began after a recent Ofsted inspection which led to the local authority appointing a new executive head.

The school’s official conversion was completed last month.
