A new Barnsley community group has been created with the aim of encouraging local people to make the most of available educational opportunities.
The Friends of the Fleets is targeted at people living in the Smithies area, and has been set up with the help of Barnsley College and the town council.
The area has been greatly improved since Barnsley College developed the old Fleets pub site on Smithies Lane, which now operates as a learning centre in its own right.
Members hope to encourage greater participation in college courses by local residents, and promote the benefits of learning for all.
Coun Phil Davies said he welcomed the support of the college in establishing closer links with the community.
“Barnsley College have been incredibly good neighbours in Honeywell and now even more so at the Fleets,” he said.
“As well as providing exceptional courses to students from across the UK, they have made time to support localised initiatives whereby local residents can benefit from the resources available to them right here on their doorsteps.”
The Fleets centre will offer activity days throughout the summer.
