STUDENTS will move into a brand new building at Barnsley College next month after seven years of planning and two years of construction.

The nine storey structure on Old Mill Lane was designed by local architects Jefferson Sheard and included state of the art facilities and equipment.

The £60 million campus offers fully-equipped classrooms, workshops, IT and learning resources including brand new hair and beauty salons, training kitchen facilities, dance studios, a radio and TV studio, two recording studios kitted out with gear used by top record labels and wi-fi access throughout.

An official handover of keys from Garry Hope, operations director at Miller Construction to the college’s chair of governors Frank Johnston marked the completion of the building work.

Mr Johnston said: “This is a landmark in the history of Barnsley College and the town. We are one of the best colleges in the country and we now have a building and facilities to match.”

At one stage the rebuilding programme was in doubt due to a national funding crisis for further education.

But because demolition of the old college had already begun, the go ahead was given for the new project to be completed.
