A LEADING light in education came to Sheffield to track the progress of a new institute, set to be the first of its kind for the county.

Lord Kenneth Baker, the driving force behind the city’s first University Technical College, donned his hard hat to view work in progress at the Sidney Street site.

The facility will be led by Sheffield College and is due to open in September.

The former Education Secretary is overseeing a raft of new UTCs being built across the UK. They aim to offer 14 to 19-year-olds the chance to take a technically-orientated course, with progression into higher education or further learning at work.

Lord Baker said: “I am delighted to see the progress of the city’s UTC. It is great to see the city getting behind this and leading the way in what will be first class training for future generations.

“We expect local companies to work with the college.”
