A Sheffield pre-school has won recognition for its work to promote communication skills among its youngsters.

Ecclesall Pre-School, which is based in Ecclesall Parish Halls on Ringinglow Road, takes in youngsters aged from two and a half to five years old.

It has been rated ‘communication friendly’ after an accreditation process carried out by staff from ESCAL - the city-wide project seeking to ensure that Every Sheffield Child is Articulate and Literate.

The inspectors praised the quality of the pre-school staff and their ability to communicate with the children, adding that the youngsters ‘were confident and keen to talk’ and that the setting was ‘rich in language’.

Pre-school manager Imtiaz Bibi said: “This award is a welcome recognition of the good foundations we give children by developing their listening, understanding and speech.

“We take time to listen to them and encourage them to talk and listen to each other.”

The pre-school is one of the oldest in Sheffield and was first set up by a group of parents in 1969.

It opens every weekday morning for 38 weeks of the year and is a non-profit making organisation.
