A teacher who has risen through the ranks over the last 25 years now holds one of Sheffield’s top education posts.

Heather Smith, 53, has been appointed principal at Sheffield College, overseeing its main sites at Hillsborough, Norton, Peaks, Sheffield City and the College of Applied Engineering.

She said: “I am honoured to have been appointed to this role, given that my career started here at the college. I firmly believe in the power of further education and its life-changing impact on individuals.

“Our vision is to build on our strengths and maximise new opportunities.”

She began her career teaching psychology evening classes at the old Richmond College, and later became a full time lecturer.

Heather took charge of Hillsborough College in 2007 and then Norton and Peaks two years ago.
