Smells of Sheffield at Christmas will be sniffed out by a city lecturer this week.
Sheffield University’s Dr Victoria Henshaw is conducting a Christmas ‘smellwalk’ in the city centre on Thursday at 12.30pm.
She is an odour expert who has just written a major new book on how smells can aid good urban design.
Dr Henshaw carries out ‘smellwalks’ in cities to help people better understand their world by deciphering the smells that surround them.
As she does so, she finds out more about what odours people associate with and detect in a particular city, and how this influences their enjoyment of the local environment.
She has run smellwalks across the UK including London, Birmingham and Manchester and in cities in Europe and the United States.
This will be her first ever smellwalk in Sheffield - and anyone can join and explore the smells of the city which will include the Christmas market on Fargate. Those interested should meet in the Winter Gardens.
