Almost every school in Sheffield will be hit by strike action on Wednesday being taken by members of the National Union of Teachers – part of a national campaign against changes to pay, pensions and working conditions.

Thousands of pupils will have to stay at home leaving many working parents to make alternative arrangements during the one-day stoppage.

Parkwood Academy and King Edward VII are among the few city secondaries asking all students to attend as normal.

Birley Community College is suspending all normal lessons, but at most secondaries the majority of the younger year groups are being told to stay away, with the focus on maintaining normal studies for GCSE students and sixth formers.

Primary schools across the city are also set to be badly affected – despite the other main teaching union, the NASUWT, deciding against action this time.

In Rotherham 11 primaries have confirmed they will close, along with Wales High School. Other secondaries will only be partially open – at Winterhill School 30 teachers are expected to be absent.

A further 19 primaries will be shut in Barnsley, while most secondaries are telling younger pupils to study at home.

Teachers from across the county will also be taking part in a march and rally, which will start on Devonshire Green and finish in Barker’s Pool.

Toby Mallinson, joint Sheffield NUT secretary, said problems in the profession were reflected by very high teacher turnover in too many Sheffield schools.

“This is caused by the remorseless increase in pressure and workload on teachers which aims to drive up standards. This strike is part of a critical debate over the direction of education policy,” he said.
