Students at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College in Edlington were given a special surprise when a group of ‘golden oldies’ performed a dancing routine to the All That Jazz soundtrack, as a big thank you for all the work they do.
Three times a year the students put on tea parties for around 270 pensioners and then organise performances and activities to entertain them, but this time round roles were reversed.
The college is currently working with local charity Move and Inspire Me, to put on activities after school to encourage people from all across the community to get healthy and active, and they were drafted in to help the silver dancers learn and later perform the routine in the College atrium as a surprise.
It was a resounding success with over 75 silvers dancers joining in the surprise performance.
Vera Purdy, the College Council Co-ordinator, said “It’s lovely to welcome the Tea Party members into College and many of them queue for up to an hour before the event starts. One lady is 102 and she joined in the dancing from her chair. All the pensioners look forward to coming along to be entertained by the students.”
