A mum-of-three says she is disgusted by a school’s refusal to authorise a holiday in term time – on her week-long break from cancer treatment.

Louise Hamilton, of Sprotbrough, was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 4 this year, aged just 40.

Over the next six months, she was given an intense course of treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Her only break in treatment was a week beginning on September 7.

She said: “My children, Brooke, aged three, Jacob, aged five and James, aged 14, have been a constant rock to me, along with my husband, Andy, aged 44. They inspired me to fight and never be defined by cancer.

“We all craved a family holiday so we took the chance to book a short break as a great way to chill after my gruelling regime.

Over 3,000 fined for school-time holidays

Family holidays ‘could become preserve of middle class’

“My youngest son’s school, Richmond Hill Primary Academy, authorised this holiday without a moment’s hesitation.

“My eldest son’s school however, Ridgewood Academy, said the holiday will not be authorised as it is not classed as an exceptional circumstance.

“I have gone through an operation, 15 weeks of chemotherapy and scans, but this is not ‘exceptional’ enough.

“I am absolutely livid. It makes me feel that I have to be on my death bed to get a holiday authorised.”

Louise, who is now in remission, has been told by Ridgewood School the holiday will be marked as an unauthorised absence but she is unlikely to be fined.

A spokesperson for Doncaster Council said they have not received a request from the school to take action.

No comment was available from Ridgewood Academy or Richmond Hill Primary Academy.
