SHEFFIELD’S Lib Dems are calling on Labour councillors to come clean on which of the city’s 36 children’s centres are likely to close over the next year.
Plans to shake up services for the under-fives will go to Cabinet next week and a report admits the number of centres will be reduced.
Labour says that, while some centres will be closed as a money-saving measure, overall levels of service for families will be maintained.
But Lib Dem spokesman for children’s services Coun Colin Ross said: “I’m sure many parents will be stunned that the council has put children’s centre closures on the table, given all the previous promises from local Labour councillors.
“They should now be honest with local people and tell us which of Sheffield’s 36 centres are under threat.
“With closure programmes on the cards, many childcare workers and care staff jobs are under threat.”
