Sheffield’s first free school came under the spotlight at a celebration event held at London’s Lancaster House.

Chapeltown Academy principal Rebecca Maxted attended the reception where guests included Prime Minister David Cameron and Education Secretary Nicky Morgan.

Over 200 free schools were represented at the event, all of which have opened over the last three years.

The Chapeltown venture is a sixth form college which aims to fill a gap in an area where supporters said post-16 options were previously limited.

Mrs Morgan said: “I am immensely proud of everything that has been achieved through the free schools programme - because this programme is a vital part of our wider plan for improving education in Sheffield.”
