CHILDREN enjoyed a lark in the park to celebrate the site being awarded coveted Green Flag status.

Four years ago Charnock recreation ground was just a dusty piece of Sheffield scrubland - before a Friends group was formed to restore its fortunes.

Now the rec is enjoyed by people of all ages, and pupils from nearby Charnock Hall Primary came to celebrate the award.

Headteacher Margaret Anderson said the school had worked very closely with the Friends, planting bulbs and making the area spick and span.

“We’ve also worked with council rangers and our parents on the project. It means a lot to us as it is the only green space around here,” she said.

“The Friends have done a wonderful job and the park now has great new play facilities. And they don’t intend to stop there, they have big plans for the future too,” Margaret added.
