Celebration of language

SINGERS’ sweet voices will be filling the air in Sheffield’s Winter Garden – but most passers-by will hardly be able to understand a word.

Songs will be performed in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic and Tigrinya, just some of the 120 different languages spoken around the city, to highlight International Mother Tongue Day.

The choir taking part in the event, between 1pm and 3pm on Sunday March 13, has been recruited from five different schools run by Languages Sheffield, which teaches English to migrants who have moved to Sheffield.
