Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts is calling for urgent action over the closure of a popular nursery in Tinsley.
Tinsley Green Nursery is to close this month following a loss of funding from the city council, the result of major Government cuts to provision for under fives.
The closure means there will be no nursery provision for two-year-olds in the immediate area.
Mr Betts said he was disappointed over the way the council had handled the matter.
He said: “Although I understand the massive financial pressure the council are under, the decision to keep nursery places for three and four-year-olds, but to force parents of two-year-old children to take them to a nursery three miles away is completely unacceptable.
“The council needs to find a way to keep nursery provision in the area for all the affected age groups and make sure that there is a continued service from September.
“I had been repeatedly assured that even if the current Tinsley Green service closed nursery provision would be retained in the area. I have requested an urgent meeting with council officers to urge them to rethink the proposal.”
