School support staff in Sheffield were honoured for their hard work at an awards ceremony.

Stars in our School was organised by education union Unison to raise awareness of the vital work school support staff do in raising educational standards in the city.

Awards were given to those who have made exceptional contribution to children and their school.

The four winners were: Cathy Varley, a teaching assistant from Bents Green Special School; Amanda Doyle, an attendance officer at Nether Edge Primary School; Darren Harrison, a technician from Newfield School, Norton; and the learning support team from High Storrs School.

Lisa Smith, Unison’s education convenor, said: “The Stars in our Schools celebration forms part of a wider campaign to raise the status of school support staff.

“This group of workers often lack the status and recognition they deserve.

“They support the most vulnerable and challenging children in our city providing high quality pastoral and educational support.

“Unison fully recognises the vital contribution they make and wanted to proactively acknowledge that contribution.”
