A LEADING mathematics professor and former Government advisor is to be given an honorary doctorate by Sheffield Hallam University for her role as a champion of maths education in the UK.

Professor Celia Hoyles OBE will be honoured by Hallam in a graduation ceremony at Sheffield City Hall in November.

Prof Hoyles was the UK government’s chief advisor for mathematics from 2004 to 2007. She was awarded the first ever Royal Society Kavli Education Medal in recognition of her distinguished contribution to research in mathematics education.

Prof Hoyles said: “I’m very honoured to be given this award and I look forward to sharing the graduation experience. I am passionate about science and mathematics, and recognise the crucial role that universities play.”
