Doncaster North MP and Labour leader Ed Miliband has pledged to help protect jobs and the future of a pit in his constituency following more than 70 job losses at the mine.
Hatfield Colliery was forced to axe dozens of workers last week after a plan to change shift patterns to increase productiviity proved unsuccessful and bosses agreed to switch back to previous working patterns.
Now Mr Miliband has promised to do all he can to help secure the future of the pit, which has been deemed secure and with a long term future by private owners Hatfield Colliery Limited.
He said: “This news is a bitter blow for workers at what is now South Yorkshire’s last operational pit.
“It’s important that efforts are made to preserve the colliery, and to prevent further job losses, and I’ll be working hard to help that process.
“Over recent months I’ve met with the pit’s management and union officials to ensure that we achieve the best solution possible for the workers and for the people of Doncaster.”
