UK MOTORISTS are easy prey for insurance companies who use underhand tactics to pressure victims into accepting cut-rate payouts, a Sheffield personal injury specialist claims.
Amanda Owen, of Wosskow Brown Solicitors, says some insurance companies send reps to crash victims’ homes offering to settle quickly – or face drawn-out court action.
The aim is to agree an unfairly low payout, she said.
The concerns were picked out by the Financial Ombudsman in its 2011 annual review which states: “We continue to see some insurers making offers to their customers that they should know are lower than they ought to be.”
Amanda said: “We’ve found some insurance companies prey on victims’ naivety and pressure clients to settle on amounts that do not reflect their losses. Accident victims should seek legal advice before settling any claim.”
