Duke visits to celebrate community centre's anniversary - PICTURES
A COMMUNITY centre in a Sheffield steel town celebrated its first anniversary with a Royal seal of approval.
HRH Prince Richard Duke of Gloucester visited the popular Venue in Stocksbridge.
The Duke was introduced to staff, took a tour of the thriving community hub and spoke with members of education classes and an old-time dance group.
And the resident Waldershelf Choir and Steel Valley Beacon Arts theatre group performed for the Royal visitor.
The Duke also officially reopened the Kelham Island Museum following its 1.4 restoration project to repair the flood damaged building and its priceless contents.
It was the Duke's second appointment at the museum, which he also visited in 2007.
He toured the buildings and was particularly impressed by the refurbished mighty River Don Engine.
In a busy day of visits, the Duke also travelled to Barnsley, where he performed the official opening ceremony of the Core in County Way.
The Core acts as a centre of support and expertise for charities, social enterprises, voluntary and community groups.
The Duke was given a tour of the building by Dr Liz Norris who is chair of Voluntary Action Barnsley.
He was also introduced to some of the centres tenants including Me Positive about Change, a recently formed HIV support group.
The Royal visitor also took time to chat to representatives of Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Helpline and the South Yorkshire Funding Advice Bureau.
