Duke visitor to two innovative South Yorkshire companies - SLIDESHOW

TWO South Yorkshire businesses received a royal seal of approval when they welcomed Prince Andrew.

The Duke of York, working in his capacity as Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, met staff at ELG Haniel Metals, in Templeborough.

The visit yesterday was organised as a result of the company receiving the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2006, in recognition of its innovative decision to install a shredding machine on site, specifically designed to shred stainless steel scrap.

His Royal Highness received a tour of the main processing yard, as well as the shredder itself, and the laboratory.

He also unveiled a commemorative plaque and signed the visitor's book.

Managing director Jeremy Edmiston said: "We were thrilled to have a member of the Royal Family visit our site to learn more about our business.

"It was a reward for all the hard work and effort of ELG employees and demonstrates that our sector of manufacturing in the 'Steel City' is very much alive and kicking."

Prince Andrew also officially opened the 15m Rolls-Royce 'factory of the future' on the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

The development is the second phase of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, developed by Sheffield University and aerospace giant Boeing, which carries out research into manufacturing techniques and technology.

He got the chance to see how factories can be made carbon-neutral by using sustainable measures, materials and renewable energy sources such as wind power.
