FINES of up to £70 could be enforced in Sheffield to help crack down on parking on pavements and grass verges.
The idea follows a Government announcement of new powers being made available to deal with the problem – a particular nuisance on Sheffield housing estates where homes were not built with drives.
Arbourthorne Labour councillor John Robson challenged Coun Ian Auckland, cabinet member for transport on the issue, asking: “Can the cabinet member confirm if the council intends to adopt these measures and, if so, when and where will they be implemented?”
When Labour was last in power, it considered bye-laws making verge and pavement parking illegal but the plans did not proceed.
Coun Auckland said: “The measures, including £70 fines, announced by the Transport Secretary Norman Baker, are a useful measure if deployed sensibly mindful of local circumstances, following consultation, and with good ‘notice’ period.
“I think proposals are best progressed by local councillors via Community Assemblies.”
