A DRIVER aged 22 has been killed, and four other young people injured, in a car crash in Barnsley.

Police said a blue Peugeot 306 hit a lamppost after leaving Industry Road at the Carlton Industrial Estate, near the St Anne’s Drive junction.

The man who died was from Lundwood. Fire crews from Barnsley and Cudworth stations freed four passengers. All were hurt, one 17-year-old girl having sustained ‘life-threatening’ injuries. A teenage boy was also treated for serious injuries in Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said the accident is believed to have happened after the driver overtook a motor scooter, also a Peugeot, near a bend in the road. The rider was uninjured.
