A GOBLET designed for civic ceremonies was unveiled at the launch of the Galvanize Sheffield festival.

The drinking vessel, designed by Michelle Clare, a metalwork and jewellery graduate of Sheffield Hallam University, was commissioned by the Lord Mayor Coun Alan Law.

Michelle, aged 42, said: “Sheffield is characterised not only by its fame as a centre of the metal industries but also by its people. Its reputation as a friendly place is well-founded.”

Her work was selected through Galvanize Sheffield’s graduate commission, which gives metalwork graduates from across the country the opportunity to produce an object for the city’s civic collection. This year invitations to take part in the commission were sent out to five universities beyond Sheffield.

The Galvanize Sheffield festival, which runs to April 24, celebrates contemporary metal design and showcases the city’s metal trades.
