A SELF-TAUGHT baker will hone his skills under the best in the business after landing a dream trip to one of the world’s most renowned centres of excellence.

Father-of-two Scott Osborne, bakery manager at Sheffield’s Roses the Bakers, is one of just two members of his profession from the UK to be offered a place on a course at the Richemont Bakery School in Switzerland.

Scott, of Frecheville, Sheffield, beat off stiff competition from 11 competitors in what is described as The Apprentice for breadmakers.

The Bakers’ Company will fund his place on the two-day course, which costs more than £2,000 for regular participants.

The award is the ultimate honour for Scott, who has been working in bakeries since he was 12 - yet has never received a day’s formal training in his life.

He worked for his father in the family business at West Bar Bakery in the city centre and moved to Roses around a decade ago.

Scott said: “Someone at work mentioned it and told me to go for it but I didn’t expect to get anywhere. I had to put a portfolio of pictures and previous awards together, then travel to London and I sat in a room where six people were firing questions at me.

“I was honest when I didn’t know the answer to a couple of the confectionary ones. I just told them I’m nearly 39, I’ve never had any training and I really wanted the chance. It must’ve worked.”

Scott will travel to Switzerland in October where he will be taught new techniques and traditional methods of making some of the finest breads, cakes and sponges in the world.

Scott, who is married to Sarah and is dad to George, six and three-year-old Maddy, said: “I’m good with bread but it’d the confectionary side of things I want to improve.

“I want to be able to make a really good birthday cake, although the girl we have at Roses is does amazing ones so I could never surpass her.”
