Dragon dance thrills shoppers ... picture gallery

ENTER the dragon - as dancers created a colourful spectacle to welcome in the Chinese New Year.

It was be the Year of the Pig, but it is the exciting traditional lion and dragon dances that capture the spirit of the occasion.

Pupils from the Sheffield Chinese School delighted shoppers outside the Town Hall with their lively interpretation of the dragon dance.

The youngsters met Lord Mayor Coun Jackie Drayton who played her own part in the ceremony - by painting in the eye of the dragon.

It was the first time the pupils had attempted the dragon dance, which takes practice, precision - and funding. The school received a 6,000 grant from the South Yorkshire Community Foundation.

In charge was Paul Cheung, who put together a team of 34 children and adult volunteers.
