MORE than 60 residents attended an open day at Sheffield’s Bernard Road incinerator to find out for themselves how rubbish from black bins can be converted into greener heat and energy.

Operator, Veolia Environmental Services, gave guided behind the scenes tours of the plant to enable local residents to gain a better understanding of the process works.

From burning waste, the site produces sufficient energy to heat more than 140 of Sheffield’s buildings and enough electricity to power over 25,000 homes.

Visitors could also find out more about recycling.
