Donkey business keeping people awake

AMOROUS donkeys are giving residents of a Barnsley village a headache - keeping them awake all night with their noisy lovemaking.

Residents of Inkerman Road, Darfield, say the donkeys - which are tethered on their recreation field - break their halters to wander free, and keep everyone awake at night with their braying.

Fed-up locals have complained to the Safer Neighbourhood team and councillors and the council has served enforcement notices on the owners on a number of occasions - even pinning the documents to the donkeys.

While the owner moves them away for a time he eventually brings the animals back, a public meeting in Darfield heard.

Arthur Mannion of Inkerman Road - which has also been plagued by vandals and muggers - said: "We seem able to get nothing done to improve life round here.

"The donkeys are noisy, and irritate many people. Recently one was left on its own out there which I felt was a matter for the RSPCA. With what goes on round here it's not right to leave an animal vulnerable."

Martin Kenworthy of Wombwell SNT said enforcement notices would continue to be served, as there was little alternative.

But Coun Trevor Smith said the problems surrounding the animals had escalated to a serious degree, coupled with teen drinking and litter in the field.

He said: "It is costing a fortune to keep it decent. And people spend vast amounts of time cleaning up."

Coun Denise Wilde recommended the RSPCA should deal with the donkeys, but was told that although the charity had moved the donkeys on one previous occasion, its care criteria were now met and officers were powerless.
