Passers-by looked on in amazement after this spectacular crash outside a Doncaster town centre opticians shop this morning.

The 62-plate Toyota Hilux pick-up truck was turning right from Printing Office Street into Priory Place when things went wrong.

It went out of control, mounted the kerb, demolished a wooden post and then smashed into the lamp standard outside Parkhurst opticians, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Fortunately no-one was hurt, “except the driver’s pride,” said a police spokesman.

“A lot of people were taking pictures and the occupants were getting a bit upset.”

The driver was a man in his 50s, with two female passengers. No other vehicles were involved.

A police community support officer directed traffic round the disabled vehicle until it could be towed away and the road was only temporarily blocked by the tow truck.
